Overview:

We are seeking a qualified individual to fill an early term vacancy for the office of Justice of the Peace. The appointed individual will serve in this capacity from May 6, 2024 through December 31, 2024, pending the election and qualification of a successor who will complete the remaining term from January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026. Further instructions on how to file for candidacy in the General Election will be provided at a later date.

Duties:

• Justices of the Peace must perform such duties as are prescribed in MCA Title 3, Chapter 10, Part 2, as well as Chapter 31 of Title 25, and Title 27, and any other duties prescribed by law.
• The Justice of the Peace supervises a small staff of Justice Court Deputy Clerks.

Requirements:

• Must attend two Supreme Court-supervised training conferences each year and pass a Certification Examination each term.
• Must take the constitutional oath of office before entering upon the duties of the office, as outlined in Montana Code Annotated.
• Must be certified as provided in Montana Code Annotated 3-1-1502 or 3-1-1503.
• Must reside in the county in which the court is held.
• Must be a citizen of the United States.
• Must have been a resident of the county in which the person is to serve for at least 1 year preceding election or appointment.

Key Dates:

• There is a judges' training conference scheduled for April 25-27, 2024, in Bozeman.

Salary:

Pursuant to Section 7-4-2504, MCA, the Park County Commission fixes the salaries of the elected officials on or before July 1 of each year after consideration of the schedule developed and recommended by the Park County Compensation Board. As of the date of appointment, this base rate is $65,105.10 annually.
